About Us

Our History

For over two hundred years, The County has been a welcoming place, for weary travellers on the Great North Road, to rest their head and fill their bellies for the road ahead. While the essence of our hospitality remains the same, the guest experience and quality of the food & drink has most certainly become worth the journey itself. In 2010, The Prime Minister and local MP, Tony Blair invited the French President, Jacques Chirac, here for dinner and a pint of the local real ale.

Our Food

We pride ourselves on our long-standing reputation for quality food and locally brewed real ale served up in a warm and friendly environment. We are so fortunate to have some great local suppliers and producers in Co. Durham, and our menus are continuously developed to capture the taste and freshness of their superb range of seasonal produce.

Our Drink

As proud supporters of CAMRA, we are delighted to offer up to to 4 different guest ales at any one time. However, our offering is by no means limited to this traditional pint. We also offer a selection of bottled and draught beers. Our wine list has been carefully created to complement the food menus. Our bar is fully stocked with a selection of spirits, but our particular favourite at the moment comes from the very local Herbal Gin Company, distilled just 4 minutes away from us.

Our Rooms

Our seven luxury guest bedrooms have been individually designed and all feature the sort of home comforts you come to expect, including en-suite facilities, comfy thick duvets, fluffy towels, toiletries, tea & coffee tray, fast & free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs.

Our Team

Whether it is your first or fiftieth visit, we look forward to offering a warm and friendly welcome to help you feel at home as soon as you step foot inside The County. We feel that our cosy and relaxed surroundings, combined with great food & drink and a team that genuinely cares for our guests is the perfect formula to the whole The County experience. We look forward to welcoming you back.
